Research and Clinical Interests
The long-term goal of our basic research is to elucidate how neuronal signaling and synaptic plasticity contribute to the selective vulnerability of different neuronal populations and thus influence onset and/or progression of different neurologic disorders. To accomplish this goal, we are investigating two distinct but related areas: (1) the role of intrinsic antioxidant defenses in the regulation of neuronal survival and in the modulation of neuronal signaling, and (2) the role of microRNAs in synaptic plasticity and malplasticity. The goal of our translational research is to improve tissue-based diagnostics of neurologic disorders; our current focus is on tools for pathologic diagnosis of neuromuscular diseases.
